The Stadium of Light fan favourite featured heavily for the Black Cats in the 2018-19 season.

Sunderland star Luke O’Nien has taken to Twitter with an emotional message for the Black Cats fanbase in the aftermath of the club’s failure to triumph in the League One playoff final.
The 24-year-old joined the Stadium of Light outfit from Wycombe Wanderers last summer and has established himself as a fan favourite, even if it took a while for him to nail down a first-team position.
For much of the first half of the League One campaign, O’Nien – who has played in midfield for much of his career – featured sporadically for the Black Cats, but after manager Jack Ross switched him to right-back, he made the position his own.
Over the course of the season, the versatile player made 52 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and registering seven assists (Transfermarkt), and with him in the team, Sunderland got to the finals of the EFL Trophy and the League One playoffs.
Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for the Wearside outfit in either competition, and with the prospect of another season in the third tier, O’Nien took to social media to voice his thoughts, thank the fans for the support, and cast an eye to the 2018-19 campaign.
Here is how some of the Black Cats faithful responded to O’Nien’s heartfelt tweet:
