A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on Jon McLaughlin’s comments regarding his contract situation at the Stadium of Light, as quoted in the Sunderland Echo.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper joined the Black Cats last summer on a two-year deal after leaving Scottish Premiership club Hearts when his contract expired, and has been a revelation on Wearside.

Sunderland fans had previously put up with some below-par goalkeeping at the club and McLaughlin’s form last season was such that he was voted the club’s player of the year, with manager Jack Ross having spoken of his desire to settle the Scot’s future (Sunderland Echo).

Indeed, the outlet reports that Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald insisted recently that, despite speculation and interest from elsewhere, McLaughlin would not be sold, but the player’s recent comments have caused some alarm bells to ring amongst the fanbase.

The Sunderland Echo quotes him as saying “My agent has had a conversation with the owners and the finance guys and they said they wanted to do something and they wanted to know what we wanted, but they haven’t made any offers or said this is what we’d like to do, so for the time being there is nothing on the table and that’s where we find ourselves.”

Here is what some Black Cats fans have said on social media regarding McLaughlin’s comments:

McLaughlin was one of the mainstays of Sunderland’s team last term as the club reached the EFL Trophy final and the League Two playoff final.
