The latest attendance figures for clubs in the top four tiers of English football have been released and it makes very good reading for Sunderland fans.
The Black Cats are top of League One for average attendance so far, third highest outside the Premier League behind Leeds United and Aston Villa, and 13th highest overall.
As a comparison, Sunderland’s 31,536 puts them ahead of four top-flight sides in the top 20 – Cardiff, Wolves, Brighton and Southampton – and three Championship sides – Nottingham Forest, Derby and leaders Norwich.
Sunderland have been in the process of bouncing back this season following a terrible few years and these impressive stats are testament to just how well the club is doing at present and the feelgood factor around Wearside.
Even last term, with all the turmoil in the air, Sunderland’s 27,635 average gate at the Stadium of Light was the fourth best in the entire division and higher than seven Premier League clubs (Chronicle Live).

Sunderland are currently fourth in the League One table, but they have two games in hand on the two teams above them and three on leaders Luton Town ahead of Saturday’s trip to Oxford United.
