Sunderland fans have taken aim at George Honeyman, after it emerged that he wanted to leave the club yesterday.

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald confirmed during an interview with Roker Report that Honeyman felt that he could play at a higher level than League One.

He said: “Jack spoke to George Honeyman and it was OK, but his agent, Margaret Byrne, said that he would prefer to be a Championship or a Premier League player.

“Now his interview at the end of the season was absolutely bang on, I’m sure he’s a lovely lad and he may well want to stay. But the conversations that the club have had are not really dissimilar to Paddy McNair.”

Sunderland fans are far less convinced over Honeyman’s ability to play at a higher level.

And they are furious that the midfielder seemingly is thinking about leaving them following their relegation.

Honeyman made 42 league appearances for Sunderland last term, scoring six goals and claiming two assists.

The youngster was expected to have a key role to play in Jack Ross’s side this season, but it seems now that he may be moved on.

Sunderland could also lose Lee Cattermole and Joel Asoro in the coming weeks, with Donald suggesting the pair were also looking for moves away from Wearside.
