Sunderland’s hopes of Championship survival took another blow as they could only draw.
Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to react to Lee Camp’s performance against Reading on Saturday, with many labelling the January signing the worst goalkeeper in the club’s history.
The Black Cats are on the brink of relegation to League One and would have been hoping that they could give their survival hopes a slight boost when they travelled to face the Royals, who themselves are not quite mathematically safe.
And despite starting brightly, Sunderland fell a goal behind from the penalty spot. Camp spilled a fairly tame shot into the Reading attacker’s path and managed to bring him down on the edge of the six-yard box. The initial effort may have been deflected, but the 33-year-old looked extremely slow to get down to stop the shot and did not exactly spring back up once the ball spilled out in front of him.
The visitors would turn the game around in the second-half however, as Paddy McNair made it two in two with a stunning long-range strike before Lee Cattermole scored a rare goal from a corner.
Reading would equalise however, to push Sunderland one step closer to League One. Camp could have done little about the goal, but that has not stopped the Black Cats laying into him on social media after the game.
The veteran has undoubtedly been a poor signing, but with none of Coleman’s other options giving him reason to believe that a change will boost their chances of not leaking goals, Camp’s place may perhaps be safe for the time-being. But the Sunderland fans are in no doubt that there should be absolutely no attempt to seek a permanent deal at the end of the campaign.
