Sunderland fans have slammed Ashley Fletcher after the Black Cats fell to the bottom of the Championship thanks to a 1-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night.

Chris Coleman’s men went into the game looking for their first win for a month and their first victory on their travels since the end of December, but they quickly gave themselves a mountain to climb.

Trotters loanee Zach Clough scored just 17 minutes into the game in seemingly controversial fashion, but Sunderland had more than enough chances to get back on levels terms – many of them falling to Fletcher.

The 22-year-old joined the Black Cats on loan during the January transfer window after his £6.5 million move to Middlesbrough (via BBC Sport) had not exactly gone to plan, and he is now still awaiting his first goal for the club four games into his loan spell.

The Sunderland fans have criticised Fletcher for missing a number of chances during the game, and suggested that Boro – the Black Cats’ next opponents – would probably have little issue letting him play against his parent club this weekend given his current form.

His display also led to some supporters putting him in the same category as the likes James Vaughan and Jozy Altidore – who both endured miserable spells at the Stadium of Light.
