According to the Shropshire Star, Sunderland are lining up a double deal for Shrewsbury Town duo Jon Nolan and Toto Nsiala.

Shrewsbury have been one of the Football League’s biggest surprise packages this season, and are pushing for promotion to the Championship.

But the reportedly planned additions of Nolan and Nsiala do rather suggest that Sunderland are already thinking of life in League One.

Sunderland are currently sat rooted to the bottom of the Championship table, and only a miracle will save them from the drop.

Nolan and Nsiala would hardly be the sort of statement signings that Sunderland would need to show that they have the fight to push for a place back in the Premier League, if they do stay up.

And it could be that plans are already put into place for life in the third tier.

Nsiala and Nolan have proven to be excellent players at League One level.

However, seeing Sunderland linked with the pair is hardly likely to make the Stadium of Light crowd excited for the future, as it suggests that the club are already resigned to their fate.
