The Black Cats striker has been in fantastic form this season, despite Sunderland’s relegation battle.
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe gestures
Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has been given his first England call-up in four years by Gareth Southgate for the upcoming fixtures with Germany and Lithuania.
The Three Lions are looking threadbare up top and the 34-year-old has defied his age to get given the nod.
He has been in sensational form for Sunderland of late. His goals last season kept them in the Premier League and his 14 goals this season are essentially the only thing giving them a chance of survival this term.
Sunderland fans are over the moon at the news. Defoe is fully deserving of his call-up and the fact that Sunderland fan and brave neuroblastoma fighter Bradley Lowery, with whom Defoe has developed a special bond, will be the England mascot, makes his call-up even more special.
That said, Sunderland fans are also fearing the call-up.
Defoe is their last hope in the fight against relegation and any injury he picks up would seem to doom the Black Cats to relegation.
