The Black Cats have announced their south stand’s new name at the Stadium of Light, and it’s a nod to their former home.

Sunderland have announced that the south stand at the Stadium of Light will be renamed the Roker End.
The new name is a nod to the Black Cats’ former ground, Roker Park, and the intense atmosphere which emanated from the stands – known as the Roker Roar.
The announcement was made on Thursday, with the official website confirming that the decision was made following several supporters’ groups including the Red and White Army (RAWA).
Sunderland stated that, following a RAWA survey which indicated a fan desire for the Stadium of Light to have greater sense of identity, over 13,000 people cast their votes regarding a new name for the south stand.
According to the article, the name Roker End was the overwhelming winner, picking up a massive 70% of the vote.
The official renaming ceremony will take place prior to the League One fixture with Bradford City on Boxing Day, and will include the unveiling of a captain’s mural within the stand.

Some Sunderland fans took to Twitter to give their thoughts on the new name and opinion seemed to split down the middle, with some loving it:
