The Black Cats remain four points behind Luton but are now seven behind leaders Portsmouth following their 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland have lost further ground on League One leaders Portsmouth as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Shrewsbury Town in Saturday’s encounter at the Stadium of Light.
The visitors have just one win from their last 17 away games but they nonetheless held their own against the Black Cats and were more clinical, with five efforts on target to the hosts’ one (BBC Sport).
Indeed, Shrewsbury took the lead on Wearside, Luke Waterfall nodding home from 12 yards off Greg Docherty’s free kick on the half-hour mark, but Jack Ross’ charges were able to draw level on the stroke of half time.
Josh Maja claimed his 14th goal of the season when he got on the end of Bryan Oviedo’s pinpoint cross to head downwards and into the back of the Shrews’ net to ensure the game was on a knife edge going into the second half.
Although Sunderland claimed a point which stretched their unbeaten home run to 12 games, some fans were not happy with the result, as it saw them fall to seven points behind Pompey, although they remain four behind Luton after their draw at Walsall.
