Sunderland fans are divided over whether Kevin Phillips would be a good choice as David Moyes’ successor.
Derby assistant coach Kevin Phillips
Sunderland are currently in the process of looking for a new manager following the resignation of David Moyes as boss.
The departure of Moyes came as little surprise with the Black Cats finishing bottom of the Premier League in 2016/17 and getting relegated back to the Sky Bet Championship for the first time in ten years as a result.
Speculation has now started and the Chronicle are reporting that Kevin Phillips has quickly moved into the frontrunning to be the next manager and is being named as the favourite by many bookmakers.
Phillips spent six years as a player at the Stadium of Light and is Sunderland’s record Premier League goalscorer with 61 strikes, including 30 in the 1999/00 season following their promotion.
Sunderland manager David Moyes looks dejected
The former striker has moved into coaching since retiring from playing, initially part of the Leicester City backroom staff before heading to Derby County – where he currently works.
It is therefore unsurprising that Black Cats’ fans are divided on whether appointing Phillips as boss would be a good move, with his status as a club legend a positive but his lack of experience a negative.
