Paddy McNair announced his return to action for Sunderland in style last night.
The former Manchester United man started and scored as Sunderland Under-23s beat Hertha Berlin 2-0 in what was his first game in almost a year.
The 22-year-old had been out of action since November of last year following ankle ligament damage, but McNair, starting in defensive midfield, looks like he’s finally on the mend and a return to first-team duties will be on his mind now.
The Black Cats paid £5.5 million to sign him and Donald Love from the Red Devils in August 2016, and fans of the Wearside club are looking forward to seeing him back in more pressing matters.
McNair’s return is a huge boost because Sunderland need all the help they can get.
Simon Grayson’s side sit 23rd in the Championship following a horrendous start to life in the Championship this season, but there were encouraging signs in the 2-2 draw at Preston before the international break.
Can they build on that promising performance in Saturday’s clash with QPR? Time will tell.
