The Black Cats duo took to the boxing ring for a bit of sparring ahead of Saturday’s League One bout against Luton Town.

Sunderland midfielder Luke O’Nien has taken a while to nail down a first-team position at the club following his summer move from Wycombe Wanderers.

For much of the first half of the League One campaign, the 24-year-old featured sporadically for the Black Cats, as seen on his season stats page on Transfermarkt.

However, since being shifted at right-back by manager Jack Ross, O’Nien has become a fixture in the Sunderland starting XI, playing the full 90 minutes in his last five league games.

Indeed, the summer signing has certainly made himself at home at the Stadium of Light, so much so that he’s now seemingly taking charge of putting the new recruits through their paces.

Jimmy Dunne had only been at Sunderland for one day since his loan switch from Burnley but he’s already suffered a blow – or maybe ten – as he took to the boxing ring and did some sparring with O’Nien.

The Black Cats eagerly retweeted some pictures from the occasion, part of a session with unbeaten British super bantamweight star Thomas Patrick Ward:
