Sunderland fans may want answers from the club on their relegation, but Martin Bain did not appease them with his latest comments.

Chris Coleman, manager of Sunderland looks on ahead of the Sky Bet Championship match between QPR and Sunderland at Loftus Road on March 10, 2018 in London, England.

It has been an awful week for Sunderland fans, with the club relegated on Saturday as they lost 2-1 at home to Burton Albion.

A dramatic turnaround late at the Stadium of Light saw the Black Cats go from having a real chance of survival to having their demotion secured in a matter of minutes.

The fallout will last all summer, but Sunderland will start next season in League One. And Sunderland fans would like some answers from the club after a disastrous two years, with chief executive Martin Bain playing a key role in successive relegations.

Sunderland fans celebrate during the Barclays Premier League match between Sunderland and Everton at the Stadium of Light on May 11, 2016 in Sunderland, England.

On Tuesday, they got their wish, as Bain took part in interviews with the local media, speaking to the Chronicle.

“I’m feeling that same pain that everyone attached to the football club is feeling,” was the headline quote from the former Rangers boss.

Unsurprisingly, supporters on Twitter were somewhat sceptical of Bain as they reacted to the interview:

Sunderland fans, understandably, are unlikely to trust that Bain is hurting, too, until there are significant changes at the club that show the Black Cats moving in the right direction.

Now in the third tier, the club simply must start on an upwards trajectory.
