The Black Cats are in the quarter-finals after defeating Newcastle Under-21s and some fans are now dreaming of a trip to Wembley.

After Sunderland ran out 4-0 winners over Newcastle United’s Under-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy in front of 16,654 fans on Wearside, one of the most highly hyped fixtures in the competition was finally over and done with.
One would have thought that would have been the end of most of the interest, but the draw for the quarter-finals of the competition has put the Black Cats up against another high-profile opponent.
None other than the Under-21s of Manchester City, the final invited side left in the competition, will now face the Black Cats in the last eight, the game set to take place at the Stadium of Light in the week commencing January 21.
The young Citizens, who have won several youth trophies in recent years including the Premier League International Cup in 2015, are the only academy team left from the 16 that entered the competition following their 4-2 comeback victory over League One side Rochdale at Spotland.
Here is how some Black Cats fans reacted to the draw on Twitter after it was made on Thursday night:
The other quarter-final ties involve Portsmouth facing Peterborough United, Bristol Rovers up against Port Vale, and Bury taking on Oxford United.
