Sunderland are once again looking for a new manager after taking the decision to sack Chris Coleman on Sunday afternoon.

Having intended to recover from Premier League relegation by stabilising under Simon Grayson in the Championship, Sunderland turned to Coleman in November having sacked Grayson following a poor start to the season.

Coleman’s decision to quit his post as Wales boss was seen as a gamble, and it hasn’t worked out for him having suffered relegation to League One.

On Sunday, Sunderland sacked Coleman before the final game of the season, and the Black Cats also saw more change as owner Ellis Short finally sold the club to Stewart Donald.

Kevin Phillips assistant coach at Derby County looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Derby County and Burton Albion at iPro Stadium on December 2, 2017 in Derby, England.

Donald will now be in charge of finding Coleman’s replacement, and reports suggest that he wants a club hero to make a stunning returning to the Stadium of Light.

The Sun claim that Donald wants Derby County coach Kevin Phillips as Sunderland boss, despite the fact that the 44-year-old has no managerial experience on his CV.

Phillips was a legend at Sunderland having hit 130 goals in 235 games for the club following a 1997 move from Watford, spending six years with the club as he became a fan favourite.

However, many Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to voice their concern about Phillips, suggesting that they don’t want his hero status to be tarnished as he doesn’t have the experience to handle the job, and would rather have Mick McCarthy return as boss this summer.
