Sunderland played out a 1-1 draw with Southampton this weekend.
Sunderland drew 1-1 with Southampton on Saturday with Jermain Defoe opening the scoring for the Black Cats only for Jay Rodriguez to score an equaliser with just five minutes left on the clock.
It was another blow for a Sunderland side yet to get going under new manager David Moyes. However, he can at least take comfort from the fact that his team got their first point on the board after back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Middlesbrough.
While Sunderland need more fire-power, their defence looked solid against the Saints, with the returning Lamine Kone unsurprisingly adding steel to the back-line, and recent addition Javier Manquillo also impressed after arriving from Atletico Madrid.
The Spaniard knows the Premier League well from his time at Liverpool and on this evidence he could soon be a star for Moyes’ men.
