Sunderland and Derby County played out a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the season.

Sunderland kicked off their Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Derby County on Friday evening.

The Black Cats went behind early when Bradley Johnson found the net, but a penalty from summer signing Lewis Grabban shortly before half time saw the points ultimately shared.

The Sunderland squad will be closely scrutinised this year after many of their players under-performed as the club slipped out of the top flight without so much as a whimper.

As a result, a few have been shipped out and others have arrived, but one player who rarely got a look in last time out could be set for a big campaign if his first appearance of the season is anything to go by.

George Honeyman featured just five times in Sunderland’s last Premier League campaign. However he started against the Rams and looked impressive throughout.

Still only 22, the versatile attacker could see this as the ideal opportunity to prove his worth and he clearly has his new manager Simon Grayson’s trust for now.

Honeyman has paid his dues with Sunderland’s under-23s, scoring 11 goals and providing 14 assists in 68 appearances, and he will be hoping to step up on a consistent basis.
