Chris Coleman suggested that Sunderland will not be able to get themselves back on track until Ellis Short has sold the club.

Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to react to the comments that Chris Coleman made regarding current owner Ellis Short and the future of the Black Cats.

In comments reported by the Guardian, Coleman suggested that the negativity surrounding Sunderland is likely to continue while Short remains in charge given that he has fallen out of love with the club and is determined to sell up at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland owner Ellis Short looks on before the Premier League match between Sunderland and Middlesbrough at Stadium of Light on August 21, 2016 in Sunderland, England.

“Obviously Ellis wants to sell the club and they recognise that maybe his love for the club was yesterday. He wants to sell the club, that’s common knowledge, so until we get someone that wants to turn a corner with it and love it, care for it and look after it, you get the negativity,” he said, as reported by the Guardian.

“If the people here who do love the club don’t think you feel the same way, then there’s a problem. We know about all that and the anger and frustration from everybody. Myself, Martin and the players have to accept that. We’ll take that on the chin. But until we have a new owner with new ideas, we are where we are.”

It has been a miserable time for Black Cats supporters over the last few years. After years of pulling off miraculous survival bids in the Premier League, their luck ran out last season, and their plight does not appear to be over.

Coleman’s men find themselves second-bottom in the Championship, three points off safety with 14 games remaining. And they face an absolutely crucial game next up as they travel to the Macron Stadium to face fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers.

Coleman’s frank assessment of the club’s current situation has prompted plenty of debate on social media, with a number of fans applauding their boss for speaking out and offering an honest assessment of the situation.

However, some also fear that his honesty may be a worrying sign regarding the Black Cats’ chances of keeping the Welshman at the club. Many were surprised when he decided to take the job earlier this season, and some, who have been there all along, fear that the penny may now be dropping for the manager regarding just how tough a job he faces, and fear that he may be considering his future.
