Luke O’Nien put Sunderland in front in the first half, before winger Aiden McGeady hit home a free kick to make it 2-0.
The result leaves Sunderland two points off automatic promotion with a game in hand over second-placed Barnsley, with fans again starting to gather hope of a push for the top two.
Manager Jack Ross will be delighted with the victory, and very pleased with the impact of substitute Lewis Morgan in the second half.
The Celtic loanee came on for Duncan Watmore on 67 minutes and created a number of chances for Charlie Wyke, which sadly went begging.
Some have been wondering just why Morgan – who worked with Ross at St Mirren – has been on the bench so much, having been viewed as a major coup when he joined from Celtic on deadline day.
The calls for him to start are now getting louder, as fans praised him for being so positive when he came on yesterday, branding him ‘quality’ and ‘very impressive’, urging Ross to use him from the start in future.
