Sunderland lost 2-1 to Cardiff City this weekend and there were limited positives to take from the clash for Black Cats fans.

Sunderland’s terrible start to the new season continued as they lost 2-1 to Cardiff City on Saturday, with goals from Craig Bryson and Joe Ralls enough to secure victory either side of a Lynden Gooch penalty for the Black Cats.

As a result, Sunderland have just six points from their first nine matches and they are firmly ensconced in a relegation battle even at this early stage of the season.

As has been the case for much of this campaign, many of Sunderland’s players disappointed on the day, failing to deliver the kind of performance expected of a team scrapping not only to pull away from the bottom three in the second tier, but also to make sure their stay in that division is as brief as possible.

It had been hoped that, with Simon Grayson at the helm, Sunderland would mount a serious promotion push between now and May.

Instead it looks as though they are going to struggle in the Championship just as Aston Villa did before them.

One Sunderland player who did impress, at least until he was somewhat bizarrely replaced with 11 minutes remaining, was Bryan Oviedo.

The full-back was played further forward on Saturday and it looked to be working for Sunderland, even if the Costa Rica international did not ultimately get on the score sheet.
