Sunderland suffered a 2-0 defeat to Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday night in the Carabao Cup at the Stadium of Light – and some Sunderland fans have ruined new signing Alim Ozturk on Twitter.

Making just his second start after remaining on the bench against Luton Town, 25-year-old Ozturk failed to show Sunderland fans why Jack Ross has brought him to the Stadium of Light.

Ozturk is just one of 12 summer signings made by Ross, who looks to give Sunderland a complete fresh start. He has also brought in the likes of Charlie Wyke, Jack Baldwin and Dylan McGeouch.

Turkey youth international Ozturk, who has turned out 74 times for Scottish outfit Hearts before joining Sunderland from Boluspor this summer, was at fault for Wednesday’s first.

He dallied on a long ball, allowing Marco Matias to nip in and poke the ball home from eight yards out after 21 minutes. Winger Adam Reach got Wednesday’s second with 10 minutes left to play.

Sunderland fans reacted on Twitter to their new signing’s display, with many unconvinced that the 6ft 3in centre-back is capable of achieving success at this level. One fan described him as “absolutely shambolic”.
