Sunderland lost 2-0 to Leeds United this weekend but how did the full-back get on?

Sunderland suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday as they lost 2-0 at home to Leeds United.

The Black Cats had picked up five points from their first three Championship matches, but goals from Samu Saiz and Stuart Dallas ensured Leeds continued their own fine start under new management while Sunderland were left to lick their wounds and go again.

Sunderland manager Simon Grayson made a double substitution in the 55th minute in a bid to change things, with James Vaughan replaced by Wahbi Khazri and Brendan Galloway making way for Adam Matthews, and the latter generated plenty of discussion on social media after the match.

The 25-year-old was an unused substitute for Sunderland’s first three league games, and he had to make do with a 90-minute run out against Bury in the League Cup earlier this month.

However, he got 35 minutes on Saturday and it will be interesting to see if he has done enough to warrant a starting spot when Sunderland square off against Barnsley in their next league match.

It is fair to say things have not gone according to plan since Matthews joined Sunderland. However he will now be hoping to build on Saturday’s performance and prove he has a long-term future at the Stadium of Light, where he will be desperate to make up for lost time.
