Matthews featured for Sunderland in their League One game against Coventry away from home at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The 26-year-old Wales international right-back did not start the match, but the former Cardiff City and Celtic star came on as a substitute as early as the fourth minute.
Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to give their reaction to the performance of Matthews, who joined the Black Cats from Celtic in the summer of 2015 for a transfer fee reported by The Herald to be worth £2 million.
