Sunderland need a new goalkeeper – and fans want West Ham’s Darren Randolph.
Sunderland have already lost Jordan Pickford, and now another goalkeeper has left the Stadium of Light as Vito Mannone has completed his move to Reading.
The Black Cats are attempting to rebuild their squad following relegation to the Championship and the appointment of Simon Grayson, and saw star goalkeeper Pickford leave for a big-money switch to Everton.
Sunderland’s Vito Mannone
Now, Sunderland have allowed another goalkeeper to leave the Stadium of Light, as Italian stopper Vito Mannone has completed a move to Championship rivals Reading this afternoon.
Mannone, 29, made 80 appearances for Sunderland following a 2013 move from Arsenal, but he is now heading to the Madejski Stadium, with BBC Sport reporting that Reading have paid £2million for his signature.
Sunderland fans have been taking to Twitter to react to the move, with many confused about just why the Black Cats have allowed another goalkeeper to leave, and ultimately expecting a new signing to come in.
Grayson does have Mika and Polish youngster Max Stryjek at his disposal, but Sunderland are now expected to bring in another shot stopper – and some fans want West Ham’s Darren Randolph.
West Ham United’s Darren Randolph celebrates
Randolph may have featured for West Ham in the Premier League last season, but Joe Hart’s arrival means he has been pushed down the pecking order at the London Stadium, and the Daily Mail report that he wants to leave in order to fight for his place in the Republic of Ireland squad.
Sunderland fans subsequently took to Twitter to suggest that Randolph would be a smart replacement for Mannone, backing him to make the move to Wearside this summer as he seeks first-team football.
