Sunderland are keen on signing West Ham United winger Robert Snodgrass.
Robert Snodgrass’ West Ham career may already be over, but he could be offered an escape route, with Sunderland interested in signing him this summer.
The Scotland international starred in the first half of last season, notching seven goals and three assists in 20 Premier League appearances for Hull, before moving on to West Ham in January.
The 29-year-old was seen as a direct replacement for Dimitri Payet, but he failed to make any sort of impact with the Hammers, as he couldn’t register a goal or an assist in 15 Premier League outings following his move to the London Stadium.
Now, BBC Sport report that Snodgrass has been told that he is free to leave West Ham either on loan or permanently, with Slaven Bilic seemingly seeing no future for the winger despite signing him earlier this year.
Now, Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has been quoted by the Daily Mail as saying that he would like to sign Snodgrass if possible, as finances at the Stadium of Light remain tight, even after selling the likes of Jordan Pickford, Fabio Borini and Vito Mannone this summer.
Grayson and Snodgrass worked together at Leeds United, and a reunion could be ideal for the winger if Sunderland can strike a deal with West Ham, as a permanent move seems unlikely right now.
Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to react to the interest in Snodgrass, suggesting that he would be a quality signing for the Black Cats, but noting that it’s a sad state of affairs that Sunderland can’t afford to sign him right now.
Others attempted to come up with ideas to get around the financial barriers, suggesting a possible swap deal involving defender Lamine Kone, who has been interesting West Ham this summer according to the Daily Star – but whether that deal could be done remains to be seen.
