French midfielder Yann M’Vila had been linked with a permanent return to Sunderland on deadline day.
Despite bringing in two new players, the biggest talking point for Sunderland fans was the situation concerning Yann M’Vila.
The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, and has been linked with a permanent return throughout the summer.
M’Vila’s contract at Rubin Kazan is set to expire in January, and the stumbling block between the two clubs has always been the amount Sunderland should pay the Russian side to acquire M’Vila’s services early.
It looked as though there had been a breakthrough yesterday, when M’Vila posted an image on Instagram of Heathrow airport, causing a frenzy between Sunderland fans as it looked as if they were finally going to be reunited with their man.
As the 11pm deadline loomed, panic began to set in for the fans, as it looked increasingly unlikely that a deal would be completed before the window slammed shut.
Things got even worse when M’Vila posted another update on his Instagram, which read: “I called Sunderland but they are not picking up the phone why? My heart has broken.”
With no word from the club and speculation as to whether M’Vila’s post was legitimate, it became clear that there was no deal, and that Sunderland would have to live without the midfielder until January at least.
It is reported that a deal for M’Vila has been agreed for January, which will see him arrive at the end of his Kazan contract, but that will do nothing to end fans’ frustrations.
With no M’Vila, Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to express their anger, disbelief, and disappointment.
