Sunderland have confirmed that midfielder Luke Molyneux has joined Conference Premier side Hartlepool United on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old winger, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, could make his debut in the league game against Harrogate Town on Saturday.

Molyneux has been on the books at The Stadium of Light since he was a youngster at Under-16 level, and was a regular for the Black Cats’ Under-23s last term.

His form earned him several call-ups to Sunderland’s senior squad and he made his first-team debut in their 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of last season.

As well as his current loan at Hartlepool, Molyneux spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Gateshead and played in both games against the Pools over the Christmas period, according to their website.

His signing is one of three that the north-east club made on Friday, with Nicke Kabamba joining from Havant & Waterlooville and Michael Raynes coming on board from Crewe Alexandra.

Luke Molyneux of Sunderland walks on the pitch before the Sky Bet League One match between Luton Town and Sunderland at Kenilworth Road on August 11, 2018 in Luton, United Kingdom.

Here is how some Sunderland fans reacted to the news, as shared by the Black Cats website and on their Twitter feed, with some concerned they may lose him at the end of the season:
