Sunderland were dealt a huge injury blow as the club confirmed that midfielder Lee Cattermole has been ruled out for four months following hip surgery due to a torn cartilage.

Cattermole has made just the three appearances for the Black Cats this season but his loss will be seen as a big blow to the side – who have had their fair share of injuries in the middle of the park this season, as Jan Kirchhoff remains on the sidelines.

During the past few seasons, the 28-year-old has been an integral part of the side that has managed to time and again battle their way back from the brink of relegation and maintain their top flight status.

After recording their first win prior to the international break with a 2-1 win over Bournemouth, the news could not come at a worse time with the side preparing for another massive game against Hull City this weekend, where three points are viewed as a must for the side.

Judging by the reaction of some fans on Twitter, it would seem that Cattermole’s presence in the side is integral to their chances of survival, while some are questioning his worth given his persistent injury problems.
