Sunderland could not prevent another Championship defeat on Tuesday night to fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers as Chris Coleman’s side continue to suffer in the relegation zone – and fans have blasted Lee Cattermole for his display.

Phil Parkinson’s Bolton earned a 1-0 win thanks to Zach Clough’s first-half strike, which remained the difference throughout despite Sunderland’s domination of possession and arguably having more chances.

It is now a fourth loss in five games, the other being 3-3 draw against Bristol City as they remain rock bottom in the Championship and three points adrift of safety.

Former Wales boss Coleman has failed to spark a revival since taking over from Simon Grayson earlier in the season, and fans are becoming restless as a second successive relegation looks inevitable.

Sunderland fans reacted to 29-year-old midfielder Cattermole’s display on Twitter as the aggressive number six failed to prevent the Wearside outfit from suffering a 17th league defeat of the season.

One fan described the former Middlesbrough midfielder as “past it”.
