The German was stretchered off in the club’s 1-1 draw with West Brom on Saturday due to a hamstring injury, which capped off a poor performance from the former Bayern Munich man, who had been celebrating his 26th birthday.

Kirchhoff began the season in the treatment room, and his return was a big boost for David Moyes, who was enduring a tough start to life on Wearside. However, Kirchhoff’s return did not see a change in fortunes for the Black Cats, who are bottom of the Premier League with just two points.
It has been another terrible start to the season for Sunderland. The club endured a stressful summer which included a managerial casualty, a new boss arriving, key players wanting to leave and limited new arrivals at the Stadium of Light, and this was all before the Premier League began.
