Rodwell was on the losing side yet again as Sunderland were dumped out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

The only things certain in life are death, taxes and Sunderland failing to beat a Premier League opponent with Jack Rodwell in their starting eleven.
The midfielder has been on the winning side in only three of his starts for Sunderland, for whom he signed from Manchester City in 2014 – and they were against Leeds United, Exeter City and Shrewsbury Town.
Although Wednesday’s defeat to Southampton – which saw the top-flight’s winless bottom club bow out of the EFL Cup – cannot solely be blamed on Rodwell, it’s fair to say the 25-year-old’s display has not received a particularly warm response on Twitter.
In fact, Rodwell was even criticised for offering his shirt to the travelling Sunderland fans after the final whistle.

Here’s what’s being said about the former England international…
Sofiane Boufal’s stunning strike was enough to see off David Moyes’ Black Cats at St. Mary’s, while the Scot’s misery was compounded by his sending off for protesting the referee’s decision not to award a penalty to Victor Anichebe.

Sunderland host joint-Premier League leaders Arsenal at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
