Sunderland midfielder impressed in draw with Liverpool.

Sunderland upset the form book by holding in form Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats were reeling heading into the fixture after a 4-1 hammering at the hands of Burnley, but answered their critics by picking up an unlikely point.

Liverpool meanwhile had just beaten Manchester City, but were pegged back by two goals from Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe.

Among the players who lifted their game for the draw was midfield ace Didier Ndong, who has been under pressure all season long after becoming the club’s most expensive summer signing.

The youngster made six tackles against Liverpool, more than any Sunderland player, with his six interceptions also a team high.

Ndong’s performance was a demonstration of what the 22-year-old is capable of, but they will now lose him as he heads to the African Cup of Nations.

While he won the penalty for Sunderland’s first goal, it can still be argued more is still needed offensively from Ndong, with the midfielder failing to create a chance or have a shot at goal.
