Oviedo had come off the bench at the weekend for the last half hour against Rochdale.
Oviedo did not look like he had missed time, putting in an accomplished performance in defence.
He sent a message to fans after the game, thanking the supporters.
The draw edges Sunderland up into second place, although Portsmouth can overtake them on goal difference if they win their game in hand.
Luton already appear to have one promotion place sewn up, meaning Sunderland could drop into the play-offs.
Oviedo’s return, his 17th league appearance of the season, was a positive on a mixed night for the side and is reason to be positive looking ahead.
