Aiden McGeady took many of the plaudits as Sunderland clinched an important victory in the League One promotion race.
A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to laud Aiden McGeady’s performance during the Black Cats’ 4-2 victory over Barnsley at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday.
Jack Ross’ side remain in the top two in League One after securing the three points. And it was McGeady who got the ball rolling on a dramatic night for the Black Cats.
The winger opened the scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled inside the box, and he provided the two decisive assists for Sunderland as Barnsley fought back and scored twice after going 3-0 down in just over half an hour.
It is fair to say that McGeady has not always been a favourite with the Sunderland fans. Having enjoyed an excellent career, he is one of the players who needed to step up last season as they looked to remain in the Championship.
He did score seven goals, but came in for plenty of criticism. Now however, he appears to be winning a lot of his critics over. The former Celtic man has scored five times in his last six appearances.
A number of fans were praising McGeady’s display in the exhilarating victory over their promotion rivals, while it has also been suggested that he is actually the best player in the division. And based on current form, it is difficult to argue too strongly against that point.
