Phil Neville has reportedly turned down the chance to take a role at West Ham as he wants to become Sunderland manager.
Sunderland fans have been reacting on Twitter to the report coming out of ESPN which suggested that Phil Neville has turned down the chance to join David Moyes’ backroom team at West Ham as he wants the manager’s job at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats go into the international break looking for their next manager after parting company with Simon Grayson in the wake of their 3-3 draw with Bolton last week.
With Sunderland bottom of the Championship table just months after they were relegated from the Premier League, it would not be a surprise if there was not a long queue of established managers staking their claim to succeed Grayson, so Neville throwing his hat into the ring is certainly interesting.
ESPN reports that the 40-year-old has rejected the chance to join Moyes at the London Stadium as he wants the Black Cats job – and that has prompted plenty of reaction on social media.
Neville is yet to manage a first-team side and the clubs he has been attached to as a coach have not exactly enjoyed a huge amount of success, and that undoubtedly makes appointing him a gamble – a gamble that some long-suffering Sunderland supporters would rather not see the club take.
However, there are some fans who are open to the idea of Neville being given the job. Perhaps feeling fed up with the avenues the club have gone down in recent years, it appears that some supporters feel that making a left-field move may not be the worst idea.
