Joel Asoro walked away from Sunderland for greener grass at Swansea City – but he’s now heading to the Eredivisie after failing in the Championship.

Just a reminder to all the Sunderland youngsters considering a move away from Wearside; the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere.
In the last 12 months or so, two of the most exciting young attackers in North East football have walked away from the Stadium of Light in the hope that they would fulfil their potential elsewhere.
But like Josh Maja, who scored 16 goals in the first half of the season for Sunderland and then barely got a game for Bordeaux after Christmas, Joel Asoro must be wondering now whether he made the right decision.

Sunderland fans were understandably dismayed when Asoro left for Swansea after just 29 first-team appearances in red and white. After all, the teenage Swede looked like a player with the world at his feet, a fearsome natural talent with the class and quality to rip League One defences apart.
Instead, he spent the 2018/19 season on the outside looking in at Swansea. After just four Championship starts in South Wales, Asoro has now been farmed out to Holland, joining Eredivisie outfit Groningen on loan with an option to buy.
In the space of just 12 months, Asoro has gone from Sunderland’s brightest young talent to the forgotten man of Swansea City. Football really is a fickle business at times.
