Dwight Yorke knows Sunderland well having spent three years at the Stadium of Light – and now he wants to return.
The phrase ‘poison chalice’ is a little overused in the modern game but you’d be a brave man to take on the vacant managerial role at Sunderland.
Not only are the Black Cats bottom of the Championship with one win in 16 games, they are also burdened with an owner desperate to sell and pretty much no transfer budget as debts spiral out of control.
Though if there is one man up for the challenge, its Dwight Yorke.
“I have tried to get hold of [chief executive] Martin Bain and left a message or two to see if there is any comeback,” Yorke, who ended his playing career with Sunderland in 2009, told talkSPORT.
“The place needs a lift, something new, something exciting.
“They have gone for experience in the past. They have tried that and it hasn’t quite worked out. Why not give it to someone new who is really eager to prove he can do the job?
“An interview would be nice.”
It’s not often that Sunderland’s fans can consider themselves united with the board but, with the club’s chiefs giving Yorke a short shrift, the majority of fans will be breathing a sigh of relief.
The Sunderland Echo are reporting that Sunderland want experience and proven managerial nous with Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom their top target.
Yorke, who has not taken charge of a single club since retiring eight years ago, does not appear to be even in contention. And supporters largely have no complaints about that.
