The Black Cats’ League One fixture against Bradford City on Boxing Day looks set to break the division’s attendance record set by the Whites a decade ago.
Sunderland have announced that the amount of tickets sold for their Boxing Day fixture against Bradford City has exceeded the League One all-time attendance record.
In a story on their official website, the Black Cats say they’ve gone over the previous record of 38,256, set by Leeds United in their promotion-clinching game against Gillingham in 2008.
Sunderland have also named the fan who purchased the record-breaking 38,257th ticket as Andrew Lee, pledging to welcome him onto the pitch at half time and allowing him to join the directors in Quinn’s Bar after the game.
The record-breaking achievement marks an impressive turnaround for the Wearsiders, who just a few months ago were in dire straits heading into the 2018-19 season after two successive relegations, but now look promising for promotion back to the Championship.
Indeed, the Stadium of Light has seen crowds averaging over 30,000 per game this term and could have the highest average League One attendance come the end of the season, exceeding Manchester City’s 28.261 from the 1998-99 campaign.
