The 46-year-old was number two to Nigel Pearson (Leicester City and Derby County), Paul Clement, Steve McClaren (both Derby) and Gary Rowett (Derby and Stoke City), but has remained out of work since the latter was sacked by the Potters in January.

Despite Phillips’ hero status at the Stadium of Light, it seems few Sunderland fans are on board with Gray’s suggestion.
