The freed Sunderland defender had been training with Charlton Athletic.

Sunderland fans are reacting after a player they released at the start of the summer joined Charlton Athletic.
Adam Matthews had been training with Charlton following his Sunderland exit and finally signed a one-year deal with the Addicks on Thursday.
The Mackems paid Celtic a reported fee of around £2.5 million for Matthews four years ago and the Welshman went on to make 67 appearances for the Wearside club, culminating in two goals and nine assists.
But it is fair to say he was never universally popular at the Stadium of Light and the response from those of a Sunderland persuasion is somewhat mixed.

This is what they are saying about Matthews’ Charlton move on Twitter…
We released him cause he’s ****

Matthews joins his Wales and former Sunderland teammate Jonny Williams at Charlton, after the midfielder re-signed for the Addicks earlier this summer.
The 27-year-old returns to the Championship, where he has played 95 times previously, after a season away.
