Sunderland drew 2-2 at Preston on Saturday, where Aiden McGeady was a hero for one set of fans and a villain for the other.
Considering their club is 23rd in the Championship and 17 points adrift of the summit, Sunderland fans don’t have much to shout about at the moment.
In short, it has been a horrific demotion to the second tier after spending so long in the Premier League and it looks a long, long way back to the top flight for now.
But if the majority of Sunderland players have the same passion as Aiden McGeady then they should be optimistic about climbing the table eventually.
All eyes were on the Republic of Ireland international on Saturday as he returned to Preston North End, having been such a big player for the Lilywhites last season.
He was, however, booed by the Preston fans for large spells of the contest at Deepdale, but he silenced his critics temporarily with a 59th-minute equaliser which proved enough to help Sunderland leave Lancashire with a 2-2 draw.
The Scotland-born winger was the picture of euphoria after his goal and fans of the Wearside club are delighted with the 31-year-old, who has scored three times and set up another three during his eight Championship games under Simon Grayson.
