Sunderland got obliterated by Celtic at the Stadium of Light.

As far as debuts go, goalkeeper Jason Steele didn’t have a dream one for Sunderland on Saturday.

The Black Cats rounded off their pre-season campaign with a demoralising 5-0 defeat by Scottish champions Celtic at the Stadium of Light.

Callum McGregor left Wearside with a hat-trick, while Jonny Hayes and Stuart Armstrong also got in on the mauling.

Steele was questionable for a couple of goals, but perhaps he could’ve done better to keep hold of Olivier Ntcham’s shot in an error which led to Hayes making it 3-0 before the break.

And suffice to say that Sunderland fans did not let the former Blackburn Rovers keeper off lightly.

Celtic are, of course, a team vying for Champions League qualification at the moment, but Sunderland are a Championship side and such abysmal defeats should not happen against Scottish opposition, be it against the Hoops or Abroath.

Simon Grayson’s side, who also lost 3-0 to St Johnstone earlier in the summer, have five days in which to recover mentally and physically as they face Derby in the Championship on Friday night.
