The Black Cats had the Chelsea and England U21 defender at the Stadium of Light during their dismal 2017-18 campaign.

A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Jake Clarke-Salter – previously a loanee at the Stadium of Light – joining Birmingham City from Chelsea for the 2019-20 campaign.

The England Under-21 captain joined the Black Cats on a loan deal during the second half of the 2017-18 season but struggled to make much of an impact and could not prevent Chris Coleman’s side from suffering relegation to League One.

Clarke-Salter, who was twice sent off during his 11 appearances for Sunderland, has since rebounded from his spell at the Stadium of Light, impressing on loan at Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem last season, and was named captain for the Young Lions’ European Championships this summer (FA).

After Birmingham confirmed the deal on their official website and social media channels, some Sunderland fans issued words of warning for the Blues faithful in the comments:

Clarke-Salter was part of the England side that won the 2017 Under-20 World Cup and he also has three FA Youth Cup winners’ medals with Chelsea, though his senior appearance tally with the Stamford Bridge club currently stands at two substitute showings.
