He couldn’t, could he? David Moyes reportedly wants to replace Rafa Benitez at Premier League powerhouses Newcastle United.

David Moyes, Manager of Sunderland looks on prior to the Premier League match between Sunderland and AFC Bournemouth at the Stadium of Light on April 29, 2017 in Sunderland, England.

Just when you thought you’d seen everything in this strange old game, the manager who took Sunderland down to the Championship just two years ago is reportedly keen to return to the Premier League with none other than Newcastle United.

According to the Northern Echo, David Moyes is interested in replacing Rafa Benitez on Tyneside.

Cue cries of derision from Newcastle fans all down the country – and giggles of glee from each and every Sunderland supporter who are loving every second of this latest meltdown at St James’ Park.

And, in truth, this speaks volumes about how far Moyes’ stock has fallen since he was handpicked as Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement at Manchester United six years ago.

The Scot has never really recovered from failing in the most impossible job in football and that disastrous 2016/17 campaign at Sunderland appears to have been the final straw for many with Moyes seemingly no longer considered by the top clubs.

Dismal performances, questionable man-management and some rather bizarre signings (whoever remembers Joleon Lescott in a Sunderland shirt?) summed up Moyes’ time at Sunderland. Relegation was an inevitability.

And the Black Cats faithful would love to see their bitter rivals suffer the same fate.
