A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to comment on the Black Cats’ pre-season 2-0 win away at South Shields and Luke O’Nien won praise for his display.

The versatile 24-year-old, who came on in the second half at right wing-back, scored Sunderland’s second goal – after Ethan Robson had opened the scoring – and came close to netting another.

O’Nien’s goal came on 54 minutes, rifling home inside the right-hand post after being teed up by Duncan Watmore, and on 62 minutes he connected on the rebound only to see his shot at the far post deflected wide.

here is what some of the Stadium of Light faithful on the social media platform made of the fan favourite’s display at Mariners Park:

O’Nien joined Sunderland from Wycombe Wanderers last summer and established himself as a first-team fixture, although he had to be patient for his opportunity to come along.

For much of the first half of the League One campaign, O’Nien featured sporadically, but after manager Jack Ross switched him to right-back, he made the position his own, although this term, it sounds as though many Black Cats fans would prefer him to be deployed in the centre of the park once again.
