Niall Quinn has denied he will be heading a consortium looking to buy Sunderland from Ellis Short.
Niall Quinn has denied that he is heading up a consortium getting ready to launch a takeover of Sunderland.
The Sun were among those reporting that Quinn had been in talks with an Irish businessman about the prospect of taking over the club from current owner Ellis Short.
This came after the 51-year-old had also been in talks with a German consortium showing interest in the club, with the Irishman having also been the head of the Drumaville Consortium that bought the Black Cats back in 2006.
They then sold the Wearsiders to Short in 2009, but Quinn – who has also been a player and manager at the Stadium of Light in the past – stayed on as chairman before leaving in 2011.
Yet when asked about the rumours claiming he was going to be the head of a group planning a takeover, the former striker told Irish outlet RTE that they were “not true.”
This has not pleased fans on Twitter who were hoping that the club legend would be returning, although as Sky Sports reports Quinn could maybe still play an advisory role in a potential takeover.
