Reports suggest the Black Cats have turned down the opportunity to sign Sakho on loan.

Watford v Liverpool - Barclays Premier League

Sunderland fans have reacted with bemusement to the Daily Mail’s claims that boss David Moyes has rejected the chance to sign Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho on loan.

Defensive reinforcements are understood to be near the top of the transfer priorities for Moyes, who was forced to play Jack Rodwell at centre-back during Sunday’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to local rivals Middlesbrough, following an injury to John O’Shea.

The Irishman’s injury comes on the back of Younes Kaboul’s recent departure to Watford, while an £18 million offer from Everton means Lamine Kone’s future at the Stadium of Light also remains uncertain.

Moyes has reportedly told the 27-year-old to ignore the offer from the Toffees and stay on Wearside, but there is nevertheless an obvious need to strengthen the squad.

However, the Daily Mail claims Moyes will not be making a move for Sakho, and is thought to be confident of Papy Djilobodji’s ability to cover the left side of central defence and is therefore looking for a different type of player.

But not all Sunderland fans agree with the decision to take a pass on Sakho, with many fans taking to social media platform Twitter to express their concerns.
