Hopefully the January signing’s injury does prove to just be a knock.

Sunderland’s season took another step closer to relegation at the weekend, as they succumbed to Manchester City in a 2-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light.

The result, on balance, was fair, but Sunderland put in a good account of themselves in what was always going to be a tough fixture against Pep Guardiola’s in-form City.

But they actually gave a good account of themselves, with several players performing well.

One such player was Darron Gibson. Signed from Everton in January for a joint fee of £7.5 million, with Bryan Oviedo also heading to the club, as reported by the Mirror.

They joined several other former Everton players at the club but Gibson’s signature was considered a major gamble.

So, when he limped off in the game, there is no doubt Sunderland fans let out a collective sigh.

With good reason as well.

Gibson’s career has been blighted by injuries and although David Moyes has stated he has just a knock to the knee, Everton fans will warn Sunderland fans that could mean much more in Gibson’s case.

He played just 29 times in the three-and-a-half seasons prior to his Sunderland move and fans at the Stadium of Light will no doubt be concerned this knock could be a major blow to the 29-year-old Irishman.
