Sunderland are set to take on Bolton Wanderers this evening.
Sunderland boss Chris Coleman’s confirmation that Bryan Oviedo was left out at the weekend for tactical reasons has not gone down well.
Sunderland were beaten 2-0 by Brentford on Saturday, with Oviedo taken out of the starting line-up.
The former Everton man was replaced by Jake Clarke-Salter, and Coleman confirmed it was for tactical reasons after the match.
He said to the Sunderland Echo: “After that first 45 against Bristol City I could have left anybody out and nobody could complain.
“We went with Jake who is a bit more defensively minded than Bryan, particularly because we had Aiden in front who is very offensively minded.”
Sunderland fans have been left baffled by the decision, and have now called for Oviedo to be used tonight.
Oviedo has actually been one of Sunderland’s better performers so far this term, despite their poor form.
The Costa Rican international has shown flashes of quality, and they will be relying on him to offer them an outlet going forward tonight.
Sunderland are under pressure to win against Bolton, as they look to move closer to survival.
The Black Cats are currently three points away from safety, with Coleman’s side sat in 23rd place in the Championship table.
